Subperiosteal Dental Implants from Windsor Family Dental

What Are Subperiosteal Dental Implants?

Subperiosteal dental implants are a type of dental implant that is used to replace missing teeth. Unlike endosteal implants, which are placed directly into the jawbone, subperiosteal implants are positioned on top of the jawbone, underneath the gum tissue. These implants are designed for individuals who may not have sufficient bone height in their jaw to support traditional implants or those who cannot undergo bone grafting procedures.

Subperiosteal Implant Construction and Placement

Components of Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants consist of a custom-fitted metal framework designed to support artificial teeth. This framework is strategically placed over the bone and secured with small metal posts penetrating through the gum. As the gum heals, it adheres to the metal framework, providing stability.

Placement Procedure

The placement procedure involves making the metal framework to fit the patient's jaw and gum tissue and positioning it above the bone. Following the healing period, artificial teeth, either removable or fixed, are attached to the metal posts.

Candidates for Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are ideal for individuals who have experienced significant bone resorption due to factors such as injury, periodontal disease, or aging. They are also suitable for those with thin maxillary or mandibular bone. Candidates may prefer subperiosteal implants over traditional options, avoiding bone grafting procedures and associated time and cost.

Advantages of Subperiosteal Implants

Avoidance of Bone Grafting Procedures

One of the primary benefits is the avoidance of bone grafting procedures. Subperiosteal implants provide a viable alternative for those unwilling or unable to undergo bone grafts.

Time and Cost Benefits

Subperiosteal implants offer time and cost benefits compared to traditional implants. The streamlined process and reduced need for additional procedures make them an efficient choice.

Customizable Options

Patients can choose between removable or fixed artificial teeth, allowing for a tailored solution based on individual preferences and needs.

Dana, my hygienist, did a fantastic job. With over 25 years of experience, she skillfully engaged in conversation with me while working on my teeth, making the cleaning process pleasant and comfortable. I also had the pleasure of meeting Kristi, Dr. DeMatthew's assistant, who was friendly and personable. Dr. DeMatthew herself was articulate in explaining the details of my dental health, making sure I understood everything clearly. Overall, my experience at Windsor Family Dental was wonderful, and I highly recommend Dr. DeMatthew and her staff.

I had to switch dental clinics because of insurance reasons and I am happy to have landed at Windsor Family Dental. The staff here is great and I love Dr. Zhao, she addressed a concern that I’ve had for years and put my mind at ease. Everyone made me feel comfortable and after my visit my lifelong dread of dental appointments has vanished.
