Aftercare

The decisions you make after a dental procedure greatly impact your recovery time. In order to assist your healthy healing process, we offer aftercare instructions for several different procedures.

Post-Procedure Instructions

The mouth is extremely sensitive and requires extra care following an operation. To maximize the results of your procedure, it’s important to practice outlined aftercare practices. Following these steps will prevent infection and ease the discomfort you may encounter. If you have any questions about your procedure or are experiencing abnormal bleeding, severe pain, swelling, or a reaction to the medication, please contact us.

Crowns

Unlike your natural teeth, crowns will not last forever without proper care. At your first visit, a temporary crown will be placed on your tooth. The temporary crown is designed to preserve the tooth until the permanent crown is ready. You will have your temporary crown for 2-3 weeks. See the full guide to aftercare for crowns.

Dentures

Clean your dentures every day to keep your smile looking its best. Skipping cleanings will allow plaque to form and reduce its brightness. If you do not clean your dentures regularly, you will experience staining and denture odor. See the full guide to aftercare for dentures.

Dental Implants

Successful oral surgery such as dental implants requires the mouth to be kept as clean as possible during aftercare.

Swelling or bruising for 2-3 days after the treatment is normal. Reduce swelling with ice packs. You should not experience extreme pain, although you may be sore. Take ibuprofen or whatever painkiller you normally take for aches. See the full guide to aftercare for dental implants.

Tooth Extractions

The aftercare of tooth extraction is just as critical as the procedure itself. Follow proper aftercare tips to help the healing process and shorten recovery time.

Call our office immediately if you develop heavy bleeding, severe discomfort, continued swelling for 2-3 days or reaction to any medications post tooth extraction. See the full guide to tooth extraction aftercare.

Porcelain Veneers

After getting porcelain veneers, it is critical to follow the necessary aftercare steps to ensure they last as long as possible. This can include exercising good dental hygiene, avoiding using veneers as tools, and properly caring for them. See our complete porcelain veneer aftercare guide for more information.

Bridges

Dental bridge recovery and aftercare are essential to ensure the success and longevity of your new restoration. This includes brushing twice a day, flossing, avoiding sticky and hard foods, and steering clear of very hot or cold food/beverages. Ann B.

I always enjoy my teeth cleaning with Emily. You can tell from her attitude that she really cares about her patients. She really is the best. Everyone is helpful at Windsor Family Dental. I highly recommend them.

Nick Z.

Dana, my hygienist, did a fantastic job. With over 25 years of experience, she skillfully engaged in conversation with me while working on my teeth, making the cleaning process pleasant and comfortable. I also had the pleasure of meeting Kristi, Dr. DeMatthew's assistant, who was friendly and personable. Dr. DeMatthew herself was articulate in explaining the details of my dental health, making sure I understood everything clearly. Overall, my experience at Windsor Family Dental was wonderful, and I highly recommend Dr. DeMatthew and her staff.

Kaci K.

I had to switch dental clinics because of insurance reasons and I am happy to have landed at Windsor Family Dental. The staff here is great and I love Dr. Zhao, she addressed a concern that I’ve had for years and put my mind at ease. Everyone made me feel comfortable and after my visit my lifelong dread of dental appointments has vanished.
