What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells designed to cover the front surface of a tooth to improve its appearance. They are in most cases made of medical-grade ceramic materials which mimic the natural appearance of teeth.

Porcelain veneers are virtually invisible when bonded to natural teeth. This kind of veneer comes in two types: traditional porcelain veneers and no-prep porcelain veneers.

Do Veneers Ruin Your Teeth?

Porcelain veneers are a safe procedure that won’t ruin your natural teeth. During the preparation process, a small amount (about 1/2 millimeters) of the tooth's surface is removed, which cannot be reversed. However, the tooth structure will not be damaged by the bonding material used to attach the veneer.

Types of Porcelain Veneers

Veneer TypeDescription
Traditional Porcelain Veneers A type of veneer made from a thicker layer of porcelain and requires tooth enamel removal to ensure a proper fit. Traditional porcelain veneers offer customization of shape, size, and color, and are a good option for significant cosmetic issues.
No-Prep Porcelain Veneers A type of veneer made from a thinner layer of porcelain that requires little or no tooth preparation. No-prep porcelain veneers are a good option for patients who want smaller cosmetic changes. However, no-prep veneers offer fewer customization options.

Porcelain Veneers vs Composite  Veneers

Although porcelain veneers are pricier compared to composite veneers, they offer better durability and resistance against staining. Composite veneers can be ideal for minor cosmetic enhancements but color-matching can be a bit more challenging.

Why Do People Get Veneers?

How Many Veneers Are In A Full Set?

A full set typically consists of 8 to 12 veneers, covering the most visible teeth when you smile. This includes the central and lateral incisors, canines and sometimes the first premolars. While eight veneers are commonly used for the upper teeth, some patients may require up to 16 veneers to transform the upper and lower teeth. The exact number depends on your smile, mouth shape and cosmetic goals. During your consultation, your dentist will assess your needs and recommend the appropriate number of veneers to achieve your desired results.

How Much Do Porcelain Veneers Cost in Wisconsin?

Dental veneers in general cost $300 - $1,500 for composite and $925 - $2,500 for porcelain, depending on your unique case.

What to Expect During the Veneers Procedure

Before choosing dental veneers, schedule a consultation with your cosmetic dentist to find out if you're a good candidate. Veneers come recommended for patients with slight defects in their front teeth, whether by damage, gaps, alignment issues, or discoloration. Your dentist will review your smile and ensure there are no clinical issues with your teeth or bite.

  1. To begin, your dentist will file a small amount of tooth enamel to make room for the veneer. The veneer will be about a fingernail thick. The enamel must be removed so your teeth don't look too big and bulky.
    • Note: Most people don't experience pain during the procedure but your dentist can apply a local anesthetic to make you as comfortable as possible.
  2. Once the enamel is completely removed to fit your veneers, molds or impressions of your teeth are taken and sent to the lab to be sculpted with liquid composite. It will take a week or two for the veneers to be made.
  3. During your second appointment, your dentist will carefully check the size, shape, and color of your veneers to ensure a personalized and natural-looking fit. Factors such as your speech patterns and facial shape will be factored in during customization.
  4. Your teeth will be cleaned, polished, and etched for the bonding process. Once the veneers are bonded to your teeth, your dentist will remove excess cement, check your bite and send you off with a new smile.

How to Care for Porcelain Veneers

After getting porcelain veneers, it's important to follow any aftercare guidelines to ensure they last as long as possible. This includes practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding using veneers as tools, and taking care of them can prolong their life. See our full porcelain veneer aftercare guide.

How Long Do Gums Take to Heal After Veneers?

Gums typically heal within 1 to 2 weeks after veneer placement. During the first few days, patients may experience mild sensitivity and discomfort. Proper gum healing is crucial for the longevity and appearance of veneers. Maintaining good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing gently around the veneered teeth promotes faster healing. Avoid hard or sticky foods during this initial period. Contact your dentist for a follow-up appointment if you experience prolonged discomfort or swelling. Most patients can resume normal eating habits and oral care routines within 7 to 14 days after the procedure.

Dental Veneers FAQs

Are veneers permanent?

Veneers are not permanent and have to be redone about every 10 years. Many patients still find veneers worth it due to their minimally invasive procedure and dramatic cosmetic enhancements.

Do veneers weaken teeth?

The tooth preparation required for veneer insertion involves removing a little bit of enamel from the surface of the tooth, which can render the tooth more vulnerable to harm. When done correctly and with proper treatment, veneers do not weaken teeth and can actually strengthen them by adding support.

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

Veneers do not ruin natural teeth when properly fitted and cared for. However, because a little portion of enamel must be removed during the tooth-preparation procedure, the structure of the tooth will be permanently altered.

Can I Get Veneers with a Crown?

Yes, you can get veneers on some teeth and crowns on others, but you can't put a veneer and a crown on the same tooth at the same time. Your dentist will ensure the veneers and crowns match in color and shape for a uniform look.
