Dental Extraction

Sometimes teeth need to be removed due to decay, disease, or trauma. Having a tooth removed or "pulled" is called an extraction. Extractions may be performed for several reasons, including:

  • Tooth decay
  • Trauma
  • Periodontal disease
  • Poor positioning
  • Preparation for orthodontic treatment

After you have an extraction, it's natural that changes will occur in your mouth. Your dentist will give you instructions to follow after the extraction, and it's important to talk to us if you have any questions or problems. Extraction Process: What to Expect

During your extraction procedure, your dentist will:

  1. Numb the affected area with a local anesthetic
  2. Remove the tooth via simple extraction or surgical extraction.

Some teeth require sectioning; in cases where the tooth is so firmly anchored, the socket cannot expand enough for removal. If you require sectioning, the dentist will divide the tooth into sections and remove the tooth one section at a time.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

Your dentist will ask you to relax for about 48-72 hours after the extraction to allow the treatment area to clot. After that, you’ll be free to return to normal activity. The soft tissue typically heals in 3-4 weeks following the procedure.

How painful is a tooth extraction?

Your tooth extraction should not be painful. You may experience pressure during the procedure, but know we will be monitoring your comfort level the entire time!

How much does an extraction cost?

A dental extraction can cost anywhere from $200 to $400, depending on the complexity of the removal and the type of anesthesia you need. Your dental benefit coverage may reduce the cost of the procedure. We’re happy to provide an affordable payment plan to be paid before the date of the procedure. We provide services to patients throughout Dane County including Madison, Sun Prairie and DeForest.

Is tooth extraction painful?

Yes, having a tooth removed can hurt. Your dentist will typically give you a local anesthetic to eliminate pain and discomfort during this procedure. After the procedure, dentists recommend over-the-counter medications to help manage the pain. A large percentage of patients report mild pain and patients who report having severe pain normally can't tell the difference between that and extreme pressure.

How do I prepare myself for a tooth extraction?

Before your tooth extraction procedure, you should ask any questions you may have and share your medical history with your dentist. You'll also want to discuss what types of anesthesia or painkillers the dentist will provide or prescribe you during and after the procedure. You shouldn't eat anything for 12 hours prior to the extraction, and prepare for someone to take you home after the procedure.

When should a tooth be extracted?

If you have impacted teeth, tooth decay, periodontal disease, tooth trauma or overcrowding, you may need to have a tooth extracted. You may also need a tooth extracted if your tooth is badly damaged and can't be restored with a filling or crown.

Should I take the day off after my tooth extraction?

It depends on if your job is physically demanding or not. If you do a lot of heavy lifting or severe movement, you may want to stay home for a day or two, sometimes even longer. When you engage in a lot of movement, your blood starts pumping and the pressure might make the extraction area bleed more. Increased heart rate and blood flow could cause your blood to clot.

What are restoration options after tooth extraction?

Replacing your tooth after extraction is important to maintain your oral health. Your dentist will assess your gums, teeth and bones after extraction to provide you with the best tooth replacement options. A few restoration options dentists recommend include dental bridges, partial dentures and dental implants. Most options can mimic the look of your natural teeth so it will be like you never even lost your tooth in the first place.

What is not allowed after tooth extraction?

Stay away from straws to prevent dry sockets. Don't use tobacco products for at least one week to avoid blood clotting. Don't spit or rinse your mouth to prevent blood clots from dislodging. Avoid blowing your nose or sneezing since this can also dislodge a blood clot. Follow any instructions regarding pain medication, eating, and aftercare that your dentist provides.
