Protect Your Mouth with Dentures

A denture is an appliance inserted in the mouth to replace teeth and provide support for the cheeks and lips. Denture teeth are made of plastic, porcelain or a combination of both. Complete dentures can be attached to dental implants to allow a more secure fit of the appliance.

Denture Repair

Over time, dentures will wear and need to be replaced or relined with the jaw. The alignment will slowly change as the bone and gum ridges recede or shrink due to teeth extraction. Regular dental examinations are important for denture wearers to check for disease or change.

What are the best dentures to get?

The best dentures for you depend on the condition of your mouth. There are several different types of dentures:

  • Conventional dentures are made after all your teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed.
  • Immediate dentures are fabricated and inserted immediately after all teeth are extracted. The tissues heal under the denture.
  • Implant-supported dentures are a form of dentures that attaches directly to your jawbone using dental implants.
  • Partial dentures cover only a partial amount of removed teeth, filling the gaps with a seamless fit between natural teeth.
  • Upper dentures are acrylic, flesh covered, and cover the palate (roof of the mouth).
  • Lower dentures are shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue.

Complete vs Partial Dentures

When all of a person's teeth are missing, the best solution is to get a complete denture set. Complete dentures are either conventional (placed in the mouth 8-12 weeks after extraction) or immediate (positioned and placed as soon as the teeth are removed). If you have some natural teeth, partial dentures are typically used to replace the missing ones. Partial dentures are usually removable as a more natural-looking appliance but can be fixed to the teeth to prevent other teeth from changing position.

If dentures aren't what you're looking for, dental implants or bridges may also be options for you.

How to care for your dentures:

Clean both complete dentures and partial dentures every day to keep your smile looking its best. Skipping cleanings will allow plaque to form and reduce the brightness of your dentures. If you do not clean your dentures regularly, you will notice staining and denture odor.

When cleaning your dentures, apply a denture cleansing paste to a denture brush. If you don’t have a denture brush, use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush the surface thoroughly and soak dentures in a cleanser while sleeping. Don’t forget to brush your gums, tongue and palate with a toothbrush to remove plaque and promote circulation.

Dentures will wear over a normal course of time and need to be replaced or relined to keep the jaw alignment normal. Regular dental examinations are important so the oral tissues can be checked for disease or change. We've provided exceptional service for patients throughout Southcentral Wisconsin including Madison, DeForest, Sun Prairie, Dane County, Colombia County, Arlington, Windsor and Waunakee.
