Dental Implants

Dental implants are the standard of care for tooth replacement – looking, feeling and functioning like natural teeth.

Implant posts are placed in the bone beneath the gum, where the teeth are missing to provide permanent support for crowns, bridges, partials and dentures. They are lightweight, durable, biocompatible and made from titanium, the most widely used material in implant dentistry.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Fortunately, no one has to accept living with fewer teeth and having to adapt their diet and smile to cope with it. Implants are extremely safe and durable, and they look and function like the real thing.

  • Stimulate and support the jaw bone when teeth are missing.
  • Prevent teeth from shifting after extraction or when teeth fall out from gum recession, tooth decay, etc.
  • Improve ability to chew favorite everyday foods.
  • Improve facial aesthetics by supporting the shape and structure of your face to prevent sunken and aged skin.
  • Improve speech issues (slurring, whistling, or spitting) that are impeded by missing teeth or large gaps.
  • Fixes lost teeth from tooth decay, gum disease (periodontal disease) and injury.

Most patients report little to no discomfort with the placement of an implant!

There is little discomfort associated with a dental implant. Most patients report implants to involve less discomfort than a tooth extraction. Local anesthesia can be used during the procedure.

Dental Implant Process: What to Expect

  1. A local anesthetic is first administered to numb the surgical sites.
  2. Incisions are made in the gums to expose the jawbone for small holes to be drilled in.
  3. The implants are then placed for the gums to close around them, and temporary teeth are provided while you heal.
  4. Healing can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
  5. Once you've healed, the temporary teeth are removed so impressions of your mouth can be taken to create your permanent teeth.
  6. When ready, the permanent teeth are screwed into place.
Frequently asked questions about dental implant procedure

Frequently asked questions:

Q: Who can get dental implants?

A: Dental implants can be placed in most adults. Adolescents may be eligible once their face structure has matured. Please ask one of our doctors to explain the benefits and risks to see if dental implants are right for you.

Q: Is getting dental implants painful?

A: No, dental implants are typically placed under local anesthesia. Most treatments can be completed in our office. Many patients tell us the placement of an implant is more comfortable than having a tooth extracted.

Q: How soon may I return to work after treatment?

A: You may return to work the next day unless otherwise instructed by your dentist. You may be prescribed medication to alleviate any minor discomfort you may have.

Q: What if there is not enough bone or gum tissue for the dental implant?

A: A graft may be needed if your dentist determines there is not sufficient bone or gum tissue.

Dental Implant Types at Windsor Family Dental

Dental implants come in various types, each designed to address specific dental needs. Our team at Windsor Family Dental offers a range of implant options tailored to suit individual requirements.

The Types of Dental Implants

Implant TypeDescription
Single-Tooth Implants Ideal for replacing a single missing tooth. A single implant post is placed in the jawbone, providing a stable foundation for a custom-made replacement tooth or crown.
Full-Mouth Implants For individuals missing all their teeth, a full-mouth dental implant offers a comprehensive solution. The procedure involves placing implants to secure a full set of replacement teeth, enhancing oral health and overall well-being.
Endosteal Implants Commonly shaped like screws or cylinders, endosteal implants are placed directly into the jawbone. They provide a secure foundation for prosthetic teeth and are recommended for those with dentures or bridges.
Subperiosteal Implants Positioned on or above the jawbone, subperiosteal implants are metal posts that extend through the gum to hold in place. These are suitable for individuals with insufficient natural jawbone or those who cannot wear traditional dentures.
All-on-4 Implants Specifically designed for a full set of replacement teeth on either the top or bottom arch, the All-on-4 method involves placing four implants in the available bone. After healing, permanent replacement teeth are secured, providing a complete dental restoration.
