Teeth Cleaning

Maintain Your Healthy Smile

Brushing and flossing your teeth are important for maintaining oral health, but they’re not the only steps you should be taking. Regular teeth cleanings keep your teeth and gums healthy by removing the lingering tartar buildup over time. Our dental clinic in Windsor is open for new patients around Southcentral Wisconsin including Madison, DeForest and Sun Prairie.

What to expect during a preventative maintenance visit?

How often should you get your teeth cleaned?

You should have your teeth cleaned at least twice a year, but some patients need to be seen more frequently. Most dental benefit plans will cover two cleanings per year. There are many benefits to keeping up with regular teeth cleanings, including:

  • Comfort. Patients who are seen more frequently often report that the procedure is much easier and more comfortable, simply because there is less debris to remove. Kind of like washing your car!
  • Oral Cancer Screening. An oral cancer screening involves a visual and physical exam of your mouth. If you notice unusual red or white patches, lumps, changes in the way your teeth fit together, or having trouble moving normally mobile tissues it is important to contact us for an evaluation.
  • Cavity prevention. Plaque buildup is the leading cause of tooth decay. Without cleaning, acidic substances eat away at your tooth enamel, leading to cavities.
  • Brighter smile. Drinking coffee, tea and wine are all pleasures capable of staining your teeth. The result of regular cleaning is a whiter smile.
  • Keep your teeth. Gum disease is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Regular cleaning removes built-up plaque before it reaches further down the tooth.
  • Fresh breath. The best way to get rid of stinky breath is good oral hygiene. Even if you regularly brush and floss, a cleaning keeps your mouth healthy and odor-free.
  • Better overall health. Studies have proven a relationship between oral and overall health. Regular dental cleanings can prevent some diseases like heart disease and stroke. Routine oral exams can uncover life-threatening medical conditions in their early stages.
  • Cost Savings. Prevention is the key to protecting your oral health and avoiding costly procedures in the future.

Teeth Cleaning FAQs

How do you prepare for teeth cleaning?

You may want to arrive early to fill out any needed paperwork or update your dental records. You are encouraged to brush your teeth before your dental appointment. If you've missed any food particles or stains while brushing, they will be removed by your hygienist. The time of your appointment might indicate whether or not you want to eat before your visit. Some people who are anxious about going to the dentist might want to avoid eating to prevent nausea in the dentist's chair.

How long does teeth cleaning take?

Depending on how much tartar and plaque build-up you have, your teeth cleaning appointment could take 30 minutes to an hour to complete. An entire routine appointment can take up to 90 minutes once your dentist comes in to assess your teeth, gums, tongue and other oral cavities. Make sure to let your dentist know if you are uncomfortable and they will take breaks. The cleaning process does not need to be rushed.

How soon after teeth cleaning can I eat?

You can usually eat right after your dental cleaning. If you have a fluoride treatment during your teeth cleaning you should wait at least 30 minutes before eating to let it set into your teeth. You may also want to avoid cold, spicy, crunchy, sticky and citrusy foods for the day. Also stay away from anything that might stain your teeth such as coffee, tea, soda, wine or berries.

At what age should tooth cleaning begin?

The first dental cleaning for your child will normally take place during the toddler years when most of the baby teeth have emerged. You should take your child to the dentist for a cleaning between their 1st and 3rd birthday to keep up with proper oral hygiene techniques. Children up until the age of 10 are extremely susceptible to cavities which is why regular teeth cleanings are important.

Is it normal for an adult to get cavities?

No matter your age, you still might get cavities. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has reported 92% of people between the ages 18 to 64 have had cavities in their permanent teeth. Just because you floss and brush your teeth regularly does not mean you're off the hook. Schedule regular teeth cleaning appointments with your dentist to prevent tooth decay, cavities and gum disease.

Is teeth cleaning painful?

Dental cleanings are not invasive procedures and should not cause you pain. If you don't maintain proper oral hygiene during dental visits, you may experience some discomfort as the dentist tries to remove the tartar and discoloration from your teeth. Gum inflammation, tooth decay and other symptoms of oral disease may cause pain during the cleaning procedure due to increased sensitivity.
