Why Whiten Your Teeth With Whitening Treatments?

Not everyone can maintain pearly white teeth through daily dental hygiene and regular teeth cleanings/polishes. Especially if your favorite food or drink is known to stain teeth, maintaining a white smile requires an extra step. The solution is cosmetic treatments to whiten teeth. Teeth whitening will not alter your tooth structure or existing dental work and can help you achieve your desired smile appearance.

What Causes Teeth Discoloration or Staining?

  • Food and Drinks: including coffee, tea, red wine, and dark-colored fruits and vegetables.
  • Age: Tooth enamel becomes thinner as you age, revealing yellow dentin underneath.
  • Medications: Some medications, such as tetracycline and doxycycline, can cause tooth discoloration.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene: Not brushing or flossing regularly can promote plaque buildup, leading to tooth discoloration.
  • Tobacco Use: Repeated use of tobacco products and smoking can cause yellowing or brown stains on teeth.
  • Medical Conditions: Some medical conditions like genetic predisposition or excessive fluorine intake can discolor teeth.

Can Yellow Teeth Become White?

Yellow teeth can often be fixed and become white again with dental whitening treatments. Professional whitening treatments are safer, faster and more efficient than drugstore approaches. In cases of extreme tooth discoloration, crowns or veneers may be the only options. However, tooth bleaching is always worth a try because of the low cost of bleaching treatments.

  2. Can be customized to meet your specific preferences.
  3. Safe and quick results - noticeable changes within 2 weeks.
  4. Little to no tooth sensitivity, common with other conventional whitening treatments.
  5. Long-lasting whitening effects that can remain up to several years.

Brighten Your Smile with KöR Whitening

KöR teeth whitening in Windsor, WI

We now offer a beefier whitening system that provides exceptional results to every patient, every time. In as little as 3 days to 6 weeks, your teeth will brighten up to your desired shade. The process consists of our dental assistants taking impressions of your teeth and fabricating trays in-house to custom-fit your mouth. You’ll whiten at home for 2-4 weeks and then come in for a final in-office session. We offer KöR Daytime (9% Hydrogen Peroxide 2 x 5 ml syringes) and Nighttime (16% Carbamide Peroxide 2 x 5 ml syringes) treatments.

KöR uses a pH of 7 which is a more neutral agent and better for the teeth. This whitening method is mostly permanent and you’ll experience little to no sensitivity. We recommend only those aged 14 and up use this method of teeth bleaching.

KöR Teeth Whitening Cost

For full mouth KöR teeth whitening, it typically costs $750 for all the tools and procedures you’ll need at home and in the office. If you choose to just do one arch, the cost is $375. Extra syringes (2) for maintenance will be an additional $50.

KöR Teeth Whitening Procedure

  • During your first appointment, a dental assistant will take impressions of your teeth. This generally takes about 30 minutes. We make the whitening trays in-house to custom fit your mouth.
  • At your next appointment, you may have in-office conditioning to prepare your teeth for the whitening procedure. We will also deliver your trays. This will take about an hour with two conditioning sessions (using 13% Hydremide Peroxide) running about 20 minutes in length.
  • You’ll take your trays home and whiten your teeth daily for about 2-4 weeks. During the day you’ll wear the trays for about an hour and at night you’ll wear them while you sleep. You’ll receive enough 5 mL KoR whitening gel syringes for whitening 2 times a day.
  • At your last appointment, we’ll provide an in-office whitening (34% Hydremide peroxide) to really solidify the whitening results. This will take about an hour and a half to complete with three sessions at 20 minutes a piece.

Disclaimer: We recommend using sensitive toothpaste while you’re whitening at home. Also, avoid food or beverages that stain the teeth.

Alternative Teeth Whitening Options

Teeth Whitening With Porcelain Veneers

An alternative option to whitening your existing teeth is through porcelain veneers. These kinds of veneers are thin shells made from porcelain placed on the front of visible teeth. The result is a smile customized to the exact shade of white you desire, one that will last longer than whitening the natural surface of your teeth. Porcelain veneers can also correct tooth size, shape, alignment and spacing, giving you an even more perfect smile.

The price of this more permanent modification is more than natural whitening treatments. However, if you are motivated to have your smile looking its best without frequent visits to the dentist, porcelain veneers could be your best option and may save you money in the long run.

Whitening With Dental Crowns

When dental crowns are placed, their shade is matched to your existing tooth color. If your natural teeth become discolored, teeth whitening treatments can help blend them with the crowns. Whitening treatments do not affect crowns as they are resistant to discoloration. It is important to avoid bleaching methods after receiving crowns, as it may damage them. Teeth bleaching is only recommended if done before crown procedures.

If you have crowns, talk to your dentist before scheduling a teeth whitening appointment.

Teeth Whitening And Tooth Restorations

If you've had restorative work done to your teeth, you may wonder if the whitening process will change their color. Bleaching, whitening trays, and Crest Whitestrips will not harm or whiten crowns, caps, fillings, veneers, partials, or composite bonding. If you have yellowed teeth and also need a restorative procedure, it's recommended that you have your teeth whitened before the restoration. After your teeth have been whitened, your dentist will be able to better match your dental restoration to the color of your natural teeth.

Teeth Whitening FAQs

How long does teeth whitening last?

Professional teeth whitening treatments can last between 6 months to 2 years. Some whitening treatments such as KoR can be permanent with proper maintenance and touch-ups. Full longevity can depend on the patient’s oral hygiene practices, dietary habits, and lifestyle choices.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening, when performed by a dentist or through dentist-recommended products, is generally considered safe. Certain at-home whitening kits may cause gum irritation, tooth sensitivity, and harm to your tooth enamel. That's why it's best to go to a professional for all teeth whitening services.

Is teeth whitening treatment painful?

Teeth whitening treatments can cause temporary tooth sensitivity or gum irritation in some individuals, but it is generally not considered painful. Any sensitivity or discomfort is usually mild and should subside shortly after the treatment. If you do experience teeth or gum sensitivity, talk to your dentist about potentially adjusting your treatment to account for the sensitivity.

Is it worth whitening your teeth at the dentist?

Yes, getting teeth whitening treatments under the supervision of your dentist is much safer and more effective than using over-the-counter whitening products.

Is there an age restriction on teeth whitening?

Most professional teeth whitening can be done at any age, but KoR whitening systems are recommended for ages 14 and up (when permanent teeth have fully erupted). It's not recommended to whiten baby teeth since whitening agents are abrasive and can cause demineralization over time.
